ruth’s wn entry: people who have changed me.

When I read Stacey's charge on Monday, I thought about all of the typical people I could write about, and quite frankly, I wasn't excited about it at all.  So then I began thinking of a person who has impacted me, but I've never written about, a person who wasn't the first to pop into… Continue reading ruth’s wn entry: people who have changed me.

Stacey’s WN Entry: Two People Who’ve Really Changed My Life

The two people who changed my life were both my teachers. Carol Snook Role: 1st Grade Teacher Carol Snook was the most amazing teacher a child could ask for. She celebrated each student and cherished what was unique about each of her 14 kiddos (the year I had her). She insisted that we keep in… Continue reading Stacey’s WN Entry: Two People Who’ve Really Changed My Life

defining book.

Recently my curriculum director gave me the book:  Adolescent Literacy:  Turning Promise into Practiceedited by Kylene Beers, Robert E.Probst, & Linda Rief.  (Is my curriculum director awesome, or what?)  I am quickly realizing that it is one of those defining books for me.  It is all of the top secondary literacy leaders in the field… Continue reading defining book.

Seven signed up (so far)

Seven of the ten girls I invited to take part in the new book accepted the invitation. Of that amount, four of their moms said that they could e-collaborate using a wikispace, which I set up over at Wikispaces.com. (It's a private wiki, so I won't be linking to it.) Hence, four of them got… Continue reading Seven signed up (so far)

A Charge for WNW: Who Has Changed Your Life?

I was perusing Educating Alice this morning and came across a post about two people who've changed her life. I thought that could be an interesting charge, and a lovely way to pay tribute to people who matter to us, for this-coming Wednesday's .

Revising… Editing… Publishing…

My students are in the revision stage for their personal narratives. I'm anticipating a November 15th Publication Date. Hence, I've been working all morning to put together revision minilessons, an editing checklist, an about the author page, and more. I've also spent some time reading Jim Vopat's "Big Ideas for Editing and Publishing," which is… Continue reading Revising… Editing… Publishing…

Poetry Friday: When will I pull out the gloves?

I'm beginning to wonder why I haven't had to pull out my gloves, my hat, or my scarf yet. In the past, it's always been cold enough for those things (by now). However, it was around 65 degrees here in Providence yesterday. I walked around without my coat in the late afternoon. Hence, I think… Continue reading Poetry Friday: When will I pull out the gloves?

Word Boxes

Inspired by Donovan's Word Jar and motivated by my school's vocabulary initiative, my students created word boxes yesterday with foam letters yesterday afternoon. These boxes are meant to be kept at home (though one student wanted to keep hers in school) and are almost like a portable word wall, but with index cards inside. I… Continue reading Word Boxes

November 1st

November, and especially November 1st, always feels like a bit of a let-down after experiencing the fun of Halloween. Here's a poem that I feel captures what kids, especially, feel like on November 1st. November There is wind where the rose was, Cold rain where sweet grass was, And clouds like sheep Stream o'er the… Continue reading November 1st
