Next week will be my first true Publishing Party in my new school. I'm really, really excited about it. I had the invitation translated from English into Spanish today and will be sending them home at Parent-Teacher Conferences tomorrow. 🙂

Revising… Editing… Publishing…
My students are in the revision stage for their personal narratives. I'm anticipating a November 15th Publication Date. Hence, I've been working all morning to put together revision minilessons, an editing checklist, an about the author page, and more. I've also spent some time reading Jim Vopat's "Big Ideas for Editing and Publishing," which is… Continue reading Revising… Editing… Publishing…
Putting it out there
I just sent ten of my former students, who've expressed an interest in doing independent writing projects going-forward, an iomoi invitation to consider joining me to work on a manuscript for a sequel to DEAL WITH IT! Powerful Words from Smart, Young Women. This is what the e-mail said (minus the girls' names): Dear _,… Continue reading Putting it out there
Writers’ Window: Another place for young writers to get published!
Check out Writers' Window, which is a website that publishes student work as long as the child follows the submission guidelines. BTW: One of my students began reading New Moon Magazine for Girls and Their Dreams yesterday. First of all, I can't tear it away from her. (I practically had to force her to read… Continue reading Writers’ Window: Another place for young writers to get published!
Empowering the Voices of Ten Girls from East Harlem
I've had a few inquiries (personally and online) about how I went about publishing DEAL WITH IT! Powerful Words from Smart, Young Women with my former students. Well, I wrote a proposal on DonorsChoose.org, which got funded by a very generous author (whose name I cannot reveal). That being said, if you're so inclined to… Continue reading Empowering the Voices of Ten Girls from East Harlem
Stand up for something… don’t just deal with it!
My father and I were talking on the phone the other night... He suggested that I spearhead an effort, with my former students, that would lead to a sequel to DEAL WITH IT! Powerful Words from Smart, Young Women. Talk about telecommuting!!! I kind of groaned thinking that he wasn't serious. But he was. His… Continue reading Stand up for something… don’t just deal with it!
Publishing Small Moment Stories in Kindergarten
I had the pleasure of spending a couple of hours at P.S. 171, my old school, yesterday when I was in NYC taking care of some wedding planning. During the time I was there, I attended the Kindergarteners first publishing party in Tiffany Colon (one of my former student teachers) and Kim Ciccone's Class. I… Continue reading Publishing Small Moment Stories in Kindergarten
creative ways of publishing
Ruth is WAY more creative than I am. Therefore, she's my inspiration when it comes to scrapbooking, creating living room wall displays (that's a whole post in and of itself), and much more. Hence, when I read her post entitled "heros" on her other blog, I was inspired by the last thing she wrote, which… Continue reading creative ways of publishing
Checking Drafts BEFORE Publishing
I just began an e-discussion with someone about whether or not teachers should check their students' drafts (i.e., EACH STUDENT'S DRAFT) prior to allowing the kids to move forward and publish their work. We both think the same way: ABSOLUTELY! This absolutely needs to happen in order to ensure that not only is the child… Continue reading Checking Drafts BEFORE Publishing
Twenty Published Pieces
Twenty Published Pieces That Grew Out of Writer's Notebook Entries Caption: My students spent two days working on on-demand writing pieces. Today eight of them shared their small moment stories in front of their peers. However, all of them took time to decorate the covers of the manila folders that hold photocopies of their original… Continue reading Twenty Published Pieces
My Writing Teacher Goals
Angela Redden got me thinking about all of my goals for the upcoming school year. I thought this would be a brilliant place for me to articulate my writerly goals, so here goes. 1. To streamline my conference record-keeping for Writing Workshop. (My Reading Conference notes have always been great, but for some reason I… Continue reading My Writing Teacher Goals
