I became a teacher to promote equity and social justice, but I'm not always sure what to do next for and with my students. The Social Justice Standards provide a roadmap for educators and integrate especially well with writing.
Last week, I wrote about getting to know students by thinking about their academic knowledge and skills, as well as their use and understanding of language. This week, I shift and consider cultural and social-emotional aspects of students' identities.
As the storytelling culture is developed in the classroom, children are likely to begin to see themselves as authors and to use their voices in braver ways to share their ideas and who they are with their peers.
As the 2020-2021 school year sets to start, we recognize that educators need each other more than ever.
