Gearing up for tomorrow’s Workshop

Here's my chart for tomorrow's LOOKING AT YOUR PLACE Activity. I've been contemplating modeling for them, but I'm leaning more towards a guided practice where I take them through the entire exercise step-by-step, revealing each new step every couple of minutes just like George Ella Lyon did for us at the WLU Conference.

Aren’t they lovely?

Take a look at the way my students personalized their writer's notebooks today. Each one of their Moleskines different from each other; just as they are all different from one another.

Open up your writer’s notebook and get ready to share!

You've heard of Poetry Friday (and some folks even know of Poetry Thursday) and blog carnivals. We're going to be starting something very similar to both of those here at Two Writing Teachers. It's called "Writer's Notebook Wednesday." This is going to an opportunity for you to share some of your writing with us (seeing… Continue reading Open up your writer’s notebook and get ready to share!

Monday’s the Day!

Monday is the day when my students will get their Moleskine Writer's Notebooks. One student originally said on Wednesday, "What if I don't want to use that one? Can I use the spiral one my mom bought me?" (Naturally, I said sure!) However, yesterday afternoon he raised his hand politely and asked me if he… Continue reading Monday’s the Day!

Getting ready for the notebook launch

I'm going to be putting these little buttons, as well as the Bagert poem on notebooks, inside my kids Moleskine Notebooks, which they'll be decorating on Monday. I showed my students their new notebooks and they were excited. They wanted to decorate them right then and there, but I said they had to wait until… Continue reading Getting ready for the notebook launch

Pencils: A Poem by a Former Student

During the 2005 - 06 school year I had a student who needed a new pencil every day. We have communal supplies in my classroom, so I had more than enough to give him. HOWEVER, it got totally out of control. In April 2006, we did something I call Paper Bag Poetry, which is where… Continue reading Pencils: A Poem by a Former Student

Selecting a variety of notebook entries…

My fourth grade colleague and I have decided to share the photocopying responsibilities. Since my week is next week, I went to her today to find out if she'd be interested in having me photocopy some of my former students' notebook entries (I have permission, in writing, so long as their identity is protected.) so… Continue reading Selecting a variety of notebook entries…

Creating Web Savvy Students

A couple of months ago I blogged about Web 2.0 and the "Did You Know" Video. I thought it was worth mentioning again, so here's the video. If you haven't watched it yet, then please take the time to do so. I think it's time that we, as educators, try to expose our kids to… Continue reading Creating Web Savvy Students

Start Writing Proposals Today!

Pat Werner, my amazing Literacy Coach from my first year of teaching, told me about DonorsChoose, an organization that matches teachers in need of funding with citizen philanthropists, in the fall of 2004. I started writing grant proposals through DonorsChoose and obtained funding for experiences I wanted my students to have. Thanks to Pat informing… Continue reading Start Writing Proposals Today!
