This week my coauthors and I participating in our little New Year's tradition of choosing our One Little Words (OLW's) for 2017.

Finding New Opportunities and Joy: All It Takes Is A Slight Twist This year presented my family and my teaching life with many changes, and each one took real focus for me. I had the opportunity to make a slight turn turning each into a change blessing or a change obstacle. The difference is in considering the intention.

In the past, I have had to go hunting for my One Little Word, but this year I just knew what it would be.
Expressing thanks for the big things, and seemingly insignificant things, can lead to happiness.
My fourth grade self's advice, my grandmother's influence, participating in the Literacy Leaders' Forum, and even a Facebook quiz and a fortune cookie have all pointed me in the direction of my One Little Word for 2016...HAPPY.
Play is at the top of my list for 2016, and I want to shout it from the rooftops. Pitting play against literacy is a false dichotomy. It's not either/or. The way to teach literacy is to provide time for kids to play, talk, dance and sing their little hearts out!
