I’m celebrating you showing up to share your writing this month!
I’m celebrating your willingness to dedicate a month of your life to being part of this online writing community!
I am celebrating the first day of the 16th Annual Slice of Life Story Challenge!
We’ll provide one tip a day, for the first half of the challenge, at the end of the announcements section. Also, you’ll find a section called “BE INSPIRED,” which will follow each day’s announcements. That section will include a link to someone’s slice of life story and/or a quote about writing.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
A special welcome to the first-time Slicers who are joining us this year! Be sure to leave the words “I’m a first-year Slicer” in your comment for the next few days so longtime members of our writing community can welcome you.
Please fill out this year’s Participant Information Form if you haven’t completed it yet. Like last year, we’re asking participants to register and commit to this Challenge no later than 11:59 p.m. EST today. This form will close tomorrow morning, March 2nd. In keeping with the spirit of a month-long challenge, it is essential to participate fully for thirty-one days.
The daily “Call for Slice of Life Stories” goes live at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time (i.e., New York time). Since we have participants on six continents, we consider the day over at midnight Eastern Time. Comments can close as early as 12:00 a.m. (the following day) since the post has been live for 24 hours. Often, the daily call for slice of life stories will stay open until the next day since our co-author team usually sleeps just after midnight (since most of us live in the Eastern Time Zone). If you post the link to your slice of life story after 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time, please go to the next day’s call for slice of life stories and leave your link there.
We will continue Multi-Lit Fridays this year so that participants are invited to blog in another language! The first Multi-Lit Friday is on March 3rd.

BE INSPIRED
Jessica Carey is a TWT contributing writer and a long-time Slicer. She recently published a slice of life story called Invitation, which is about a moment on a recent family trip seen through her daughter’s eyes. As we know, children can help us see the world in new ways with their unjaded perspective. Check out her post and then be on the lookout for something a child says that enables you to see the world differently.
QUESTIONS

AND FINALLY…
For the first time in 16 years of doing this, the intro post didn’t publish correctly at 12:01 AM. It posted, but it posted with all of last year’s comments. Good thing I woke up in the middle of the night. (First time I’ve ever said that.) I fixed the issue, and here we are! I sincerely apologize if you could not leave your link after just midnight. The rest of the week should be smooth sailing with the posts!
Welcome new slicers!

I love the metaphor you used with speed bumps (to writer’s block). You powered through with a poem, and I already know two things about you-1) you’re a tenacious writer and poet 2) you must be patient to listen to Spotify advertisements!

Hi Karyn! I’m a newcomer to the challenge, so I appreciated reading your greeting and a little bit about yourself. You have a beautiful family, and you sound like an incredibly dedicated person teaching for 20 years and slicing for 7! I’m glad you continue to persevere, even when things are both “something look forward to and try to avoid annually.” You articulated that feeling so perfectly! I can think of many instances where something is both demanding and sustaining at the same time, especially in education.

Hi Heidi! I feel like I’m in the room with you with your detailed description. As teachers, we all have grown accustomed to tuning out all the noise around us, especially when you have to share a room as we did last year. Sometimes we need to take a break from what we’re doing and just take time to be mindful of our surroundings and the sounds around us.
