key beliefs?

I’m a part of our district’s literacy task force.  At our last meeting we were assigned the task of writing a mission statement for the teaching of writing & reading within our district.  So what are some of your KEY BELIEFS when it comes to teaching writing & reading?  I’ll share my list later — I’d love to hear what others think.  Please, please leave a comment (can you hear the groveling?).  🙂

  1. My beliefs about reading and writing are as follows (in no order that is):

    1. If we are teaching writing to our students and asking for them to take risks, we must do that as well. Show them that you had to go out on that small branch as well!
    2. Reading is never ending… show them the power and excitement of what reading can do for them. Get them excited about reading by reading books that you love-
    3. SHARE-SHARE-SHARE- in both reading and writing I am learning that students gain so much understanding from each other. Keep them talking and engaged in conversation.
    4. Writing takes practice, time, and more practice… show them this- Create a environment for this practice~

  2. I believe that reading & writing need to empower all learners at whatever level they are at. I believe a key element to growing as a reader and writer is confidence. In order to enjoy the process of developing reading & writing skills, one must see others enjoying the process and enjoy it themselves. I think that’s it in a nutshell.

  3. What a great list this will be when so many people have posted!

    I believe that reading and writing are connected and must be for students to do them well.
    I believe that we have to give students time to read and write (long blocks of uninterrupted time) on topics of their choosing.
    I believe that we need to provide mentors to students – books, poems, articles for writing – ourselves, older students, parents for reading.
    I believe that we need to read and write with students and for students.

    I’m sure there are many more things I believe about reading and writing, but I’ll hold off. I can’t wait to read what others have to say.

  4. I think I’ll echo some of Chery’s sentiments, but here goes…

    My key beliefs about reading:
    1. Let them see you stumble and get back up again. (It’s okay to miscue when you’re doing a read aloud, as long as you self-correct. I do this in front of my kids all of the time since it shows that I’m self-monitoring constantly.)
    2. Find some incredible read aloud texts and build discussions around them. Allow these discussions to be the anchors of your minilessons so that children will have positive literary experiences in order to connect to when they’re doing their own writing.
    3. Start the year off by asking “When do you fake reading and why?” It gets the truth out into the open. Then you know how to work with reluctant readers from day #1.

    My key beliefs about writing:
    1. Teachers of writing must be writers themselves. Write, and write daily. Write: it’s good for you!
    2. Kids need to see your notebook opened up, read, and exposed. Share the good entries and the bad ones so that children come to realize that not all writing needs to be perfect as long as it comes from the heart.
    3. Celebrate the small victories struggling writers have. Use their work as a touchstone text for the rest of the class. This will make them realize that their writing matters too.

    I could go on and on about my beliefs for each of these. However, it’s 5:02 a.m. and I need to shower and get dressed for school. I’ll leave it at three for each (for now).

  5. I believe I need to make children feel how much I love reading. I believe I need to develop that love in children by letting them progress at their own rate. I believe I can make a difference in a chid’s attitude about reading.
