Write about it in your notebook!

One of my students got injured in the classroom yesterday. Hence, he had to make a trip to the hospital emergency room. I visited him in the evening and found that he had two hospital bracelets on. I suggested that he tape them into his writer’s notebook after he got discharged and then use those artifacts to spur-on some entries.

This is not the first time I made a suggestion like this. I’ve had quite a handful kids who’ve gotten hurt through the years and have had to get medical attention. I’ve always encouraged them to write about it. Those stories, while not always pleasant to read, are often cathartic for the kids to write AND allow them to have the chance to slow down a small moment in time and make some sense out of it.
