My Summer Reading List

The Context: As summer approaches, I have been reflecting on my school’s first year of implementing an inclusion model. This year our classrooms welcomed students of all abilities, many of whom would have been served in self-contained programs at other schools under our previous model for special education services. I’m not going to lie, it has been an incredibly challenging year. I have learned so much, and I have so much more to learn. This summer, once I take some time to decompress and relax, there are two professional texts that I’m excited to read.

Arise: The Art of Transformational Coaching By Elena Aguilar

Why I’m excited to read it: First off, I love Elena Aguilar! Every book I’ve read by her has made me a better instructional coach. The first sentence of the online description says this book “delivers a compelling and inspirational message about how to coach in the face of daunting challenges.” I didn’t need to read any further. I texted my coaching partner and told her I had found a summer book study for us to do. Education today is full of daunting challenges, and I feel them daily at my school. I’m excited to learn how to be a transformational coach to better support teachers in our current context.

You can buy your own copy of the book and download a free book study guide from Elena Aguilar’s Bright Morning website.

Comprehensive Literacy for All: Teaching Students with Significatnt Disabilities to Read and Write By Karen A. Erickson and David A. Koppenhaver

Why I’m excited to read it: My school’s speech-language pathologists recommended this book, and they are some of the smartest people I work with! This book covers all aspects of literacy, including chapters specifically on emergent writing, writing, and spelling. Flipping through these chapters, I see student work samples, descriptions of strategies to try, ideas for accommodations and modifications, minilesson samples, and research briefs. I’m excited to add more tools to my toolbox for supporting students with significant disabilities and their teachers!

You can buy your own copy of the book from the Brookes Publishing website.

What are you excited to read this summer? Wishing you a relaxing summer full of reading and writing!
