BE INSPIRED

As a first year participant of SOLSC, I’m discovering that I carry some slices with me long after I’ve read them. I think back to them when I’m on walks, trying to be a bit more present for inspiration to come in, when I’m looking for writing to read to my students, when I sit down to write and am full of new craft moves to try.

Clickety Clackety, by Judy Koval, is one such slice. Judy, who portrays the kind of writerly life and variety that I wish for each of my students (and for myself!), writes about a memory of being intrigued by words as a child, while her mother practiced using a typewriter. On days that feel less than slice-able, I think of “Clickety Clackety,” and of all of the untold stories from the years before I was a writer. I hope that I can relive and retell those stories with as much vividness as Judy has:

“I remember being in awe as I watched her fingers flying over the keys. Clickety clackety clickety clack, DING, swoosh. Clickety clackety clickety clack, DING, swoosh. Clickety clackety clickety clack, DING, swoosh. Again and again and again, I heard those same sounds until “Zzzzip!” Mom snatched the piece of paper out of the typewriter and quickly rolled another one in.”
