Poetry Friday: A Carl Sandburg Poem

This week Kelly Fineman is hosting Poetry Friday.

Even though it’s pretty hot and sticky outside during the day, there’s something wonderful about the summer nights we’ve been having. The following poem, by Carl Sandburg, is just lovely. I hope you enjoy it as much as I like it.

Summer Stars
by Carl Sandburg

BEND low again, night of summer stars.
So near you are, sky of summer stars,
So near, a long arm man can pick off stars,
Pick off what he wants in the sky bowl,
So near you are, summer stars,
So near, strumming, strumming,
So lazy and hum-strumming.

  1. My parents live in the high mountains (nearly 8,000 feet). One of the joys of visiting them is going outside at night and looking up. They have few neighbors and few lights and wow, do they have stars. So many stars you have to remember to breathe.

  2. I think I’m missing out on those starry nights. There’s too much artificial light around my house to see more than the moon and the brightest planets. I need to get out under the strumming once in a while.
