Lunch Box Poetry

I had an idea in the shower this morning (the place of many wonderful thoughts).

When I have kids I think I’m going to put a poem into their lunch box every day of the school year when they’re in elementary school in order to foster love of poetry.

One way to make this less cumbersome is to type up or photocopy 180 poems prior to the start of the school year. Cut them up and place them in an envelope (one envelope per each child you have). Then, every day when you make your child’s lunch, slip a poem into their lunch box. After school, perhaps you can discuss it with them.

If anyone tries this, let me know how it goes.

  1. Very cool idea! My 1 year old son has his dose of poetry every day before his nap. He brings a poetry book to me & asks “Poetry?” It melts my heart! Your idea will be a way to keep poetry going once nap time is long gone!
