Slice of Life Story Challenge

Day 23 of the March SOLSC #SOL23

Welcome back to the March Slice of Life Story Challenge, where we’ve been writing small stories, slices of life, every day for the past TWENTY THREE days. Educators from around the world are with us, and we couldn’t be more proud of this community of writers, and teachers of writing.

BE INSPIRED

For the past several days, I’ve shared song lyrics that I hope have sparked memories and ideas for stories. Today I’d like to share a song whose lyrics mirror the story of my own life very closely. Maybe some of you have experienced moving from a city to the country, or vice versa, and you’ll connect the way I do. Or maybe you’ll find an image, a line, or an interpretation within the lyrics that speaks to you.

I wish that for each of you in this community—to find a song, a poem, or work of art that tells your story. When you find those, I hope they inspire you to tell your story in your own way.

One strategy that works really well is to read the lyrics, and highlight your favorite lines, or lines that seem important to you. These lines might spark a memory, remind you a person, or spark a reflection that helps you get started writing.

Honky Cat, by Elton John

When I look back, boy, I must have been green
Bopping in the country, fishing in a stream
Looking for an answer, trying to find a sign
Until I saw your city lights, honey, I was blind

They said, get back, honky cat
Better get back to the woods
Well, I quit those days and my redneck ways
And, oh, the change is gonna do me good

You better get back, honky cat
Living in the city ain’t where it’s at
It’s like trying to find gold in a silver mine
It’s like trying to drink whiskey from a bottle of wine

Well, I read some books, and I read some magazines
About those high-class ladies down in New Orleans
And all the folks back home, well, said I was a fool
They said, oh, believe in the Lord is the golden rule

They said, get back, honky cat
Better get back to the woods
Well, I quit those days and my redneck ways
And, ooh ooh ooh ooh, oh, change is gonna do me good

They said, stay at home, boy, you gotta tend the farm
Living in the city, boy, is going to break your heart
But how can you stay when your heart says no?
How can you stop when your feet say go?

You better get back, honky cat
Better get back to the woods
Well, I quit those days and my redneck ways
And, ooh ooh ooh ooh, oh, the change is gonna do me good

You better get back, honky cat
Living in the city ain’t where it’s at
It’s like trying to find gold in a silver mine
It’s like trying to drink whiskey, oh, from a bottle of wine
