It’s the final day of the Classroom Slice of Life Story Challenge! CONGRATULATIONS!
We hope you and your students enjoyed the challenge as much as we did. When you leave your link today, let us know your thoughts, feelings, reflections, and suggestions for next year.
It’s been a wonderful month of reading and writing. We hope that you’re inspired to keep on writing. You are all invited to join us every Tuesday for our Slice of Life Story Challenge throughout the year. And, of course, we hope to see you all next year!
Best Wishes,
Tara, Beth, Anna, Stacey, Dana, and Betsy

Thank you to everyone for creating a writing community that provided students with an authentic purpose for writing… an audience. They LOVED receiving comments and they enjoyed reading writing from other students. Many reflected, that although it was hard, they noticed growth in their writing.

Well, I did a much better job at getting my students involved last year, but am so glad I offered it up to this year’s small handful. You MUST read Andrea’s slice today on How to Survive April Fool’s Day…trust me, she is an expert on the matter! And yes, I would welcome a Tuesday Classroom Slice of Life option as well. Thank you to all who helped host, and to all who commented (or have yet to comment). And, OH! Can someone set off fireworks, send me text messages, e-mail, snail mail…ANYTHING to help me begin getting my students psyched up for this in FEBRUARY next year? I really dropped the ball by not pumping it the month before…next year, though, right? Live and learn? Thanks again…enjoy these last few slices from the CCS Slicers of 2015!

I have two third graders who were very faithful, and a handful of others who wrote more than they would have if they wouldn’t have been in this challenge. I just heard one of my girls say that today she was going to write about how sad she is that the challenge is over. The best part is that she was one of my lowest writers and she has grown so much through this challenge. Thank you so much to all the other teachers and students who encouraged my students to write more. I will be back next year with a new set of writers. We will have more posts up in the next couple hours.

Thanks for the reflection!! My TWT colleagues and I will definitely consider having a designated Classroom SOLSC on Tuesdays throughout the year. In the meantime, we hope you’ll post your own slices on Tuesdays and you can always share your students’ work that way.

It was hard to get started this year, as March began for us with two weeks of graduation testing and then Spring Break, but I was still impressed with how many students participated (especially over break!) and how much they improved as writers! They will be continuing to write through this week due to our challenging start.
Like Michelle, I would love to have a classroom challenge on Tuesdays all during the school year! I think that would make the March challenge even more meaningful. Last year, I started my classes slicing on Tuesdays in February to lead up to the challenge, and it really helped. I hope to encourage them to keep slicing on Tuesdays for the rest of the school year!

Michelle, thanks so much for your reflections about this year’s Classroom Challenge! There is not a separate Classroom Slice of Life Story Challenge on Tuesdays per se, but you could certainly post a link to your own slice, and include your students’ as well!

This was my first year hosting the Classroom SOL with my students and I’m so glad I did! I had about 15 kids participate and I had four who completed the challenge. Tomorrow all bloggers will be recognized at our PTA meeting and a few parents will be recognized, too, for their commenting and encouragement of student posts!
For us in year one of the Classroom SOL Challenge, just getting in the rhythm of writing each day and remembering to link their posts to mine was our focus. In year 2, I know that I can have the kids who are in year two of the blogging challenge really get serious about the commenting! Getting students commenting will be my drive next year for sure.
Will there be a Classroom SOL on Tuesdays? I am sure I would have a few kids who would write each week if there is! Thank you for hosting this wonderful community, where my students have become writers who love to share their ideas with the world!
And now for our last post. I asked my students to reflect on the month yesterday, so hopefully we will get some of their reflections, too!
