interviews + personal essays.

Dave Eldridge & I have been working on a personal essay unit in his sixth grade class.  As the week went on, I’ve gotten more & more excited about this unit of study.

Dave wanted to included the opportunity for students to interview their family members from another generation.  At first I wasn’t sure how this would fit in.  As the week went on & our immersion in the genre increased, I was able to see how it will work quite well.

The first few days of the week, students were immersed in the genre and began collecting some essay entries in the notebooks (sans the first couple of lessons in the Lucy Calkins Essay book from Units of Study for Intermediate Grades).  Then on Thursday & Friday we discussed interview questions on techniques.

As I wrote my interview questions, it became crystal-clear to me that after I interview my grandma, I will be able to have some material upon which to reflect & develop a thesis statement.  The interview will then provide me with a source of support for my thesis.

I’m looking forward to returning to school & seeing how the interviews went & the student response to them.

  1. I’d like more information as this unit progresses. What are some examples of thesis statements? Did they go back to interview again, once they’d started developing their essays? Was there a variety of different topics, and what were they?
