What’s happening right now in classrooms?
Test prep season is here—and for many teachers and students alike, it can be one of the most stressful times of the year. Writing tasks bring layered demands: students must read and comprehend unfamiliar passages, unpack what questions are asking, and produce organized responses that clearly show their thinking.
It’s no surprise that classrooms can start to shift from vibrant writing communities into spaces that feel repetitive, predictable, and overwhelming. But test prep doesn’t have to feel this way.
With thoughtful use of AI tools, we can scaffold writing tasks more intentionally and transform test prep into something interactive, supportive, and even engaging.
Here are a few practical ways to make that shift.
Use AI to create responses that students can analyze.
One powerful strategy is using ChatGPT to generate multiple levels of responses to the same passage and prompt.
Try pasting a test-style question into ChatGPT and asking it to create responses at different performance levels (for example: beginning, developing, and strong). Then invite students to:
- sort responses from weakest to strongest
- justify their rankings
- identify what makes the strongest response effective
- revise weaker responses together

Instead of guessing what test scorers want, students begin noticing what effective writing actually looks like. This kind of hands-on analysis moves them beyond rereading directions and into meaningful decision-making as writers.
After studying examples, students are far more prepared to write their own responses with confidence.
Use AI to create visual representations of test passages.
Another way to scaffold comprehension is by using AI to turn text into visuals.
For example, try asking ChatGPT to transform a short constructed response into a six-panel comic strip. Students can then annotate the panels with dialogue, setting details, and feeling clues. This helps make comprehension visible—and helps you determine whether students are struggling with the reading or the writing task itself.

Similarly, Gemini can generate illustrations for sections of a passage inside Google Slides. These visuals give students supportive entry points into complex text before they begin writing.

Ask AI to break complex writing tasks into manageable steps.
When students feel overwhelmed by writing prompts, getting started can become a road block.
Gemini can help by:
- breaking test questions into smaller steps
- generating illustrated directions for responding
- annotating extended responses with strengths and next steps
You can even create reusable Gems that guide students through routines like unpacking prompts, selecting evidence, and organizing ideas. These supports reduce cognitive load and help students feel more successful as writers.

Use AI to create test prep games in seconds.
One of the easiest engagement boosters is asking ChatGPT to transform a traditional passage and essay prompt into a classroom game.
Simply:
- paste a passage and prompt
- ask ChatGPT to “turn this into a game for 3rd graders”
- adapt the activity for whole-class lessons, small groups, or conferences
This small shift can instantly change the tone of practice from routine to purposeful.
A Final Thought.
Test prep doesn’t have to feel repetitive or stressful. With intentional scaffolding—and a little help from AI—we can create learning experiences that support confidence, engagement, and stronger writing at the same time. When students feel successful and excited, the growth follows.
