Write. Share. Give.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • We ask all participants to leave comments on at least three Slicers’ blog posts each day of the month. Since it’s Sunday, consider giving yourself a mini-commenting challenge to see how many connections you can make with other Slicers today. Consider reading to see what techniques each Slicer used to compose their piece. Feel free to comment on what you’re noticing. Try out a technique you saw another Slicer use in your writing today, tomorrow, or sometime this month.
  • Below this announcement is a list of first, second, and third-year participants who authorized me to share their blog information when they signed up. I encourage you to visit and comment on as many of their blog posts as possible.
  • Starting tomorrow, you’ll notice posts about the teaching of writing going up on our site on Mondays and Wednesdays this month. Be sure to leave your submission for the SOLSC on the daily “Call for Slice of Life Stories,” which goes live at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time (New York time).
    • As always, we encourage you to leave comments on our posts about the teaching of writing!
  • One. More. Thing. Please watch this:
The fact that this connects with today’s TIP OF THE DAY is a happy accident!
Type a single space after the punctuation in your teaser, then add the link to your slice of life story. Avoid pressing enter, as it generates a large preview that clutters the comment section.

BE INSPIRED

Anyone who’s ever been in pursuit of a bathroom will resonate with Glenda Funk‘s post, “In Search of an Unlocked Restroom.” Glenda’s slice is about something that deals with our most basic of needs, but it’s written with precise details and has so much voice. Today, perhaps you will focus on something that seems mundane, but you’ll write about it in a way that brings the ordinary to life.

The following quote from Michael Weber is for anyone feeling squeezed for time or is unsure if they’ll be able to keep up with the SOLSC. If you want to keep going, consider this advice:

Here’s something you probably already know: it’s too easy to avoid writing. So my advice is to be hard on yourself about finding the time to write—extremely hard—but then be kind to yourself after that. Don’t worry about quality. Just put the time in, day after day. Make writing more important than other things in your life. Because anyone can write when they feel like it, when they have a good idea, when they’re not sick or hungover or tired. I recommend writing when you don’t feel like it, when you have no good ideas, when you couldn’t be more busy and have a hundred reasons not to write. Turn writing into something you have to do.
