  1. Please be sure to comment on our daily inspiration/questions. We hope this fostering a sense of community among the teachers who are participating! Have an idea for how to do this even better? Great! Leave your suggestion in the comments or contact us using the information below.
  2. It’s not too late to reach out to another teacher who is participating in the challenge and partner up. You may find it a bit easier to teach your students to comment on other students’ writing if you get familiar with one or two other classroom blogs and how they work.
  3. Only post the link to your students’ slices of life in the Padlet. Do not post the link to your personal slice of life stories here. Go to the daily call for individual slice of life stories to post your personal slice.

For more than 27 years, Lanny has taught, coached, presented, staff developed, and consulted within the exciting and enigmatic world of literacy. With unyielding passion and belief in the possibility of workshop teaching, Lanny has worked to support students, teachers, and school administrators around the country in outgrowing themselves as both writers and readers. Working first as a classroom teacher, then as a coach and TCRWP Staff Developer, Lanny is now a literacy specialist, working and living in the great state of Connecticut.   1. Thanks for sharing. I feel I have neglected this blog post, especially since we are on Spring Break right now. I think that also makes blogging during March more difficult. My teaching partner and I set up our students on our class Padlet, which has been more successful this year. More kids are blogging from home. They are not commenting as much, even though we said to comment on at least three posts before writing your slice. This challenge is optional. The learners come in before school from 8 – 8:30 to blog, that works well for those who have taken the challenge. I think when we return, I will talk to the learners about how we can be more strategic with commenting on other students slices. I like your idea Kristi.
    I am slicing myself, which seems to be more challenging this year and I cannot really pinpoint why (this is my second year for myself and for my students).

  2. Hello, all. I hear a theme of struggling to fit it all in, and we’re definitely feeling that! I am slicing daily and have been making sure I get my comments on others’ slices, which takes more time than I anticipated. My students are also doing a slice here and there, but no one has taken on the challenge of daily slices. They can blog from home, but most posts go up during daily workshop time. We’re on KidBlog, so we get a few comments from other classes, but it’s sporadic. It’s optional for my students like it is for Kathleen’s. I love Kristi’s idea about posting slices from around the world for my students in Google Classroom. I’m going to give that a try as my next step.

  3. Kristi, that is a great idea! I love reading your responses here each day. I was hoping to also get more conversation here during the Classroom Slice of Life. I am also blogging each day on my personal blog and mostly it’s going well. March is an exceptionally busy month for me with my daughter’s birthday, a school committee I’m co-chairing for my son’s school which is active during the first half of March and the dreaded report cards at my school which is all-consuming. Some of my students are blogging each day and that is more than they’ve done all year when it comes to blogging! Some have been very excited about the comments they’ve received. Others are really not blogging much. It’s optional so I can’t make them. I celebrate each kid as a blogger of the day to try to raise enthusiasm and solidify their identities as bloggers. I like the idea of posting links on Google Classroom. As far as class time, I often let the kids blog as part of “morning work” when they are unpacking/ settling in. I try to get one period or two during the week for blogging but our curriculum is so packed! Thanks, Kristi, for your contributions here!

  4. Hi Teachers! It seems there are very few of us from the padlet commenting on here each day. How is March going for you? Are you slicing as well? How much class time is given to the challenge? I’m just curious and feeling a bit alone out here this year. I am slicing myself. That is going well. My students are primarily blogging on their own, as they choose. We are wrapping up a Fantasy unit right now and as students publish I am giving them the option of blogging, but first they have to comment on three other slices (from our class or other blogs). They have a spreadsheet with the URLs for all of their classmates and I post different class links from around the world on Google Classroom occasionally. What about you?
