CLASSROOM SOLSC FOR STUDENTS: DAY 1 OF 31

4th Annual Classroom Slice of Life Story Challenge Invite

Welcome to day one of the Fourth Annual Classroom Slice of Life Story Challenge. We are delighted you’re here. You are giving your students quite a gift – the opportunity to share their writing with the world and to be part of an online community committed to daily writing for an entire month.

This is the first of 31 posts where you will share the permalink to your students’ slice of life stories in the comments section.

Please take a few minutes to read through this post before sharing.

The value of choice in Ralph Fletcher’s tweet can’t be overstated. While it’s true, all writers have their individual processes, and some may find a prompt is helpful in writing. I think it’s safe to say writers thrive on choice. Choice of writing space, topic, tools, craft, message, and voice. When we allow writers to have the choice we allow writers to find themselves in their writing, while also discovering the power of their written words.

As you and your writers begin the SOLSC remember the value of choice. Allow your writers choice and sit back and watch the writers come alive.

During my first year of the writing challenge, I had a few students who preferred the

Allowing Grace to have this choice not only brought her to the challenge, but the choice allowed Grace to discover the writer within herself. As the challenge pulled to a close Grace stood up during our group meeting and said, “I am starting the Grace Writing Challenge, if you want to join the challenge write your name here!” The entire class lined up to continue the writing challenge with Grace. As the days moved forward, many dropped out, but not Grace! Grace took her writing into the summer! The story doesn’t end here, Grace and her older brother have continued to slice with our class for the past two years and plan to participate again this year! Grace is not only a writer, but she’s also an inspiration and a leader.

Students who are under 18 must have an adult linking for them. Any student links left without an adult link will be deleted.

  1. Hello everybody. So, the link below is to my classroom blog. My students’ blog posts are identifiable by the label – SOL # followed by the child’s name. For example, SOL #1 – Zach. These are on the right hand side of the page. I hope this is clear and will make it easy to find my students’ blog posts every day.
The link to my classroom blog is: http://mselisacoto.blogspot.com/
Looking forward to the challenge this month and having my students comment on other classrooms posts. I teach grade 5
