The Essential Role of Writing in Contemporary K-12 Classrooms

We’re delighted to be speaking at the Penn State York Summer Institute, which will take place in York, PA in June.  We’ll be delivering a keynote speech, “Teachers as Writers: Two Perspectives of How Writing Can Change Your Instruction,” together on the morning of June 27th.  Throughout that day, we’ll be leading separate breakout sessions.  Ruth’s sessions focus on celebration, minilessons, and refining reflective practice, while I will be leading sessions about conferring, using children’s literature to enhance the teaching of writing, and routines to help writing workshop run smoothly.

The institute can be taken for three (nondegree) graduate credits or for Pennsylvania Act 48 hours.  Besides the two of us, the week-long institute also features the following people as keynote speakers:

  • Jeff Anderson

  • Ruth Culham

  • Kate Messner

  • Stephanie Romano, Jolene Borgese, and Dick Heyler

If you’re free from June 24th – 28th, then I hope you’ll consider signing up for this incredible week of professional development.  Click here to get more information.  Do let us know if you’re thinking about attending!
