Favorite Genres

One of the questions on my Year-End Writing Evaluation was “What was your favorite genre/unit of study this year and why?” All of the kids only choose three genres from a list of eight. They chose (in order of popularity):

  • Memoir
  • Poetry
  • Picture Books/Fiction

The unpopular genres were personal narrative, friendly letters, personal essay, literary essay and persuasive letters.

Thanks to Ruth for posting about the original Year-End Writing Evaluation since it inspired me to create the elementary school version of it.

  1. Just now read this after finding a link on your new web site. Congratulations on that, by the way! It is a great start. Can’t wait for more pages to peruse!

    My question has to do with memoir versus personal narrative. What is the distinction you make between the two that the kids would like memoir but not like personal narrative?

    You can probably tell that this is something that is fairly new to me so clarifying the distinction would be very helpful to me!
