Digital Storytelling

This afternoon Ruth and I attended a presentation by Shannon Baumann entitled "Digital Storytelling in the K-5 Classrooms." Baumann gave us a plethora of suggestions for creating digital stories with our students. In our typical fashion, we decided to practice what we preach and gave ourselves a little "self-assignment." So, without further adieu, we present… Continue reading Digital Storytelling

We’ve arrived in San Antonio!

For a few days we're just a few blocks apart, not 872 miles apart! We've spent the day in sessions, which we'll be blogging about soon. Right now, we are headed out to dinner so we can put the final touches on the presentation we're giving tomorrow night.

We’re Headed to NCTE!

In the next 24 hours, Ruth and I will go from being 872 miles apart to being in the same city, San Antonio, which we couldn't be more thrilled about! We're both heading to Texas to present “'I HATE WRITING!!!': A Discussion About Inspiring Reluctant Writers By Writing Alongside Them." We'll likely blog, over the… Continue reading We’re Headed to NCTE!

I’ve Got My Work Cut-Out For Me Tonight

Nearly all of my students turned-in the first drafts of their personal essays today so that they could get my feedback. Awesome, right? YEP! The only thing is that they're huge in length! Some of them really linked a LOT of patches of thought together… imagine how long they'll be once they start adding transition… Continue reading I’ve Got My Work Cut-Out For Me Tonight

“It’s like a hard-working office in here Ms. S.”

"It's like a hard-working office in here Ms. S.," my student said to me as I stood back admiring how diligently all of my students were working this morning. I nodded, "You're absolutely right!" Take a look at the slide show I created of my kids working efficiently as they transitioned from their patches of… Continue reading “It’s like a hard-working office in here Ms. S.”

Preview: Reluctant Writers’ Self-Reflections

I've been going through some of my former students' end-of-year self-assessments in writing (adapted from Buckner's Book Notebook Know-How) that were completed in June 2007. I'm doing this to find just a couple of good quotes about the way that my reluctant writers transformed, in their own eyes. Here's what the most reluctant of the… Continue reading Preview: Reluctant Writers’ Self-Reflections

Turning a Quote Into a Patch of Thought

Today was the last day my students were collecting patches of thought for their personal essays. This is a copy of the end-of-the-workshop teaching share that I did on how to turn a quote into a patch of thought (the first one was done in conjunction with the student whose thesis the Dangerfield Quote supports):… Continue reading Turning a Quote Into a Patch of Thought

Memories of Snow Days

This week's Memoir Monday Post was a cinch for me to do since I'm writing about my roots for the "Stories in Hand" Class I've been taking. I let my writing take me a little off-course from the prompt Sprague gave us, which was, "How much snow was there as a child?" I like the… Continue reading Memories of Snow Days
