In a few short weeks, many schools will begin winding down the school year in preparation for a summer break. I remember, as a third-grade teacher, I enjoyed this time because it meant making summer writing plans, practicing writing outside, and creating summer writing kits for students to build on the momentum they had created throughout the year.
Over the years, the co-authors have shared many posts and even a whole blog series dedicated to summer writing. Below, I’m sharing some of the various ways you can set your students up for success as they journey into summer with some independent writing plans.

I plan to introduce some fresh writer’s notebooks for my seventh graders before the school year ends. Just like those third graders, some of whom are seventh graders now, we will go outside, practice using our notebooks, and prepare to capture some writing for inspiration.
