It’s Tuesday! Welcome to the Slice of Life Story Challenge!

This month, I have collected some quotes from Toni Morrison to inspire us. Some of them come from a 1993 interview in The Paris Review. If you have time, the entire interview is well-worth reading!

For those of you who will be attending NCTE, please join us for our annual NCTE Slicer Dinner. We have some space constraints, so RSVP to Stacey — stacey[at]staceyshubitz[dot]com — sooner rather than later! As much as I love the slicing connections, I’m so looking forward to catching up with people in person!

Is a partially completed reading challenge a win?

Nearly didn’t make it this week, but that quote from Toni Morrison talked me into it. This one is about the equinox – and vocabulary. https://persistenceandpedagogy.com/2019/09/24/equinox/

Sometimes we just need to write about what is on our hearts and minds, even if it isn’t exactly in the genre it’s supposed to be…. and sometimes we need to give young writers that same freedom.

This is exactly what I need to get my students sharing ideas! I’ve got them reading, but the graffiti wall will get them sharing – they are high school students, and they do sometimes say and write “inappropriate” things, but my job is to show them how to challenge norms or expectations in intelligent ways rather than to prevent them from having creative possibilities – thank you for this joyful post.
