Looking for Slice of Life writing ideas? Here’s a slice about something all kids care about: snack time; it was written by Rachel for our sixth grade March Challenge a few years ago:

Savory Snack

I was almost finished taking my long trek home from school. My backpack was as heavy as it could get, as if it were full of bricks instead of binders. My stomach grumbled like a mini thunderstorm. I longed for a chair to collapse in, and a brownie to devour. In the distance, I saw my mom outside of our house walking my dog. I couldn’t wait to be there.

I opened the door and let it close behind me with a thud. I dropped my backpack on the ground, taking the tremendous weight off of my back. I raced to the kitchen to fetch myself a snack. My mouth watered as I looked in the pantry for some kind of junk food.

“Not so fast!” my mom said interrupting my thoughts about food. “Have something healthy that will give you energy to do your homework.” I tried to block out the words she was saying. I considered both options.

‘Healthy…dessert…healthy…dessert…healthy dessert!’ I thought. It was like a light bulb went off in my head because the next thing you know, I was slicing a ripe, yellow banana. Next, I scurried to the pantry, once again, but this time it was to retrieve the peanut butter. I unscrewed the lid and scooped out a mound with my knife, so that I could spread it on the banana. It smelled amazing, and I took in as much of the delightful aroma as I could. Lastly, I got out the chocolate chips that would be the final touch to my snack. I grabbed a handful out of the bag, and gently pressed one big chocolate chip onto each and every banana slice. Now, I was so excited to eat this snack that I couldn’t wait one more minute. I grabbed a piece from the plate and gobbled down the banana. My hunger was immediately satisfied. As I feasted on the rest of my snack, I thought about how I was lucky to be able to eat after being hungry, unlike some people who don’t have any food. We are fortunate to have this many choices, and sometimes we don’t acknowledge it.
