HAPPY NEW YEAR!

This post is doing triple-duty. First, I hope your new year is off to a great start! May 2013 be a good year for you and your loved ones! Second, I want to encourage you to link up your slice of life stories today. (If you’re on Twitter, feel free to use the hashtag #slice2013.) Third, I want to talk to you about one little word.
We don’t talk about new year’s resolutions around TWT, we talk about words. Little words. Usually just one little word for each year that we choose to live by. Therefore, rather than making a resolution you may or may not keep after today, think about crafting one little word to live by all year long. (If you need help, then check out our archived posts about one little word.) For instance, instead of resolving to go to the gym four times a week, you might want to choose a word like “healthy” or “well-being.” Personally, I like to find a quote to accompany my one little word since it helps me deepen the meaning behind the word I’ve selected. Sometimes I choose the word first. This year the quote helped me anchor my choice of a word.
I’ve been thinking about the one little word I will live by for the past few weeks. I’m recommitting myself to improving my physical health this year. (I focused on my health back in 2009 when I choose the word wellness since I wasn’t healing quickly enough after my May 2007 neurosurgery.) Therefore, I looked at words like bloom, diligence, rejuvenate, restoration, strength, and vigor. However, it wasn’t until Sunday morning, when I was reading an article in The New York Times’ Travel Section that I decided upon vitality. The article contained a quote that felt as though it was speaking directly to me:
Wellness is this feeling of confidence, this feeling of vitality, this feeling of “You got this.’ Wellness is a verb just as much as an adjective. –Dr. Jim Nicolai, medical director of the Andrew Weil integrative wellness program

Warmest wishes for a happy, healthy, and FUN 2013. Looking forward to slicing with all of you today and every week this year.

I was trying to think of what to write about as I make a return to slicing (haven’t sliced since last April), and I’m grateful that Stacey posted about one word for the new year. I’m also grateful my trips to Hawaii have served me well in providing me with what I think might be a fitting word for this year…

I am not doing so well with the one word challenge. I was trying to make embrace work….then trying for hope….and what I am finding is that for me, right now, words are most meaningful when embedded in a context….like this wonderful community that makes my days richer and provides a framework for my reflection and an audience for my writing. So perhaps my word is thanks?

Connect–I spent August connecting with other teachers nationwide. When August was over, I stopped. I miss it terribly and realize that while I am not great at connecting generally, I am good at being helpful. I will connect with those I already know through the channels I already have. I will connect with those I don’t know but follow. I will be helpful and grateful as my primary tools for connecting.

My word this year is celebrate. A quote by Mary Mary Oliver speaks to me about celebrating life to its fullest. “When it’s over, I want to say: all my life I was a bride married to amazement. I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms.” Here is to a new year where I celebrate, taking the world into my arms! Happy 2013!

First, I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! I have been thinking about my choice of words. Last year I did well at first and then lost my direction. This year I have chosen healing as my word. It is a word that feels right.
Years ago a healer told me that often when we start to heal our body undergoes what he called a healing crisis. I would re-experience some of the illness that my body was trying to recover from as it recovered.
As I think about this word I know I have not always taken good care of my body. Now it is saying enough already it is time to do something positive. It will be an interesting journey – maybe even a little scary at times. I have missed my on line friends these last few months. I’m working on getting back on track.
On a lighter note I my post is about a project I am using with my older students.

This year my word is courage – The courage to take risks and forge new paths. I find myself at a crossroads in many places in my life, and don’t want the decisions that I make to be shaped by a fear of the unknown (or the voices of others), but by courage and heart (my own inner voice). I appreciate the words of Steve Jobs in the quote below . . .
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.
