I will be attending the Teachers College Summer Reading Institute this week. While this will be my ninth summer institute, it’s only going to be my third time attending their Reading Institute. Since I’m a NY State certified literacy specialist, which encompasses reading and writing, I decided it was time to pay more attention to the reading side of things. (As you may have noticed, I’ve spent a lot of time nurturing writing-related professional development in the past five years!) My session placements are:
- Addressing the Pandora’s Box of Main Idea Instruction: Scaffolds, Small Group Work, and Curriculum Can Help Students Infer and Interpret Nonfiction Texts
- Tap the Power of Technology and Media to Teach Higher Level Comprehension
I usually bump into and meet-up with other bloggers while I’m at the Writing Institute. Therefore, I wanted to know if anyone out there is attending this week’s Reading Institute. If you are, please leave a comment. Hopefully we can get a group of slicers or bloggers together for coffee one morning.
OMG–I’m in your afternoon session! I feel like I’m learning with a celebrity!
Any chance you went to the closing session about good new books? I had a really hard time choosing, but I thought the new books one would be easier to copy notes from if I could find someone who attended it.

@Natasha: I’ll look forward to meeting you in-person tomorrow. My hair is curly this week so don’t let that fool you if I look different from my picture.
I went to Amanda Hartman”s session on staff development methods for literacy coaches. The books session will be repeated tomorrow.

Hi Stacey,
Have fun with Maggie and Natalie – They’re both great! I worked with Maggie last year in a section dedicated to revision and loved how she brought digital literacies and technology into our work that week. I was at the Reading Institute in July and will be at the writing institute next week. I attended Mary’s section on critical literacy when reading non-fiction and building research text sets and Shana’s section on Close Reading to Monitor for Sense, Infer and Interpret. I wanted to invite you (and your readers) to check out my blog at tappingintowords.blogspot.com while you are at the institute – and perhaps even participate in a guest blog post if you are interested to share some of your insights from the reading institute. You and Ruth are my blog mentors – It is amazing to me the community that you have built and sustained over the years and am hoping to have the same success (if I can just stick with it!).

My district invited us to go, but I can’t go since I am going to class in the afternoon for literacy certification. Bummed I won’t be there. Wish I could meet you in person.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE share ideas from TC! I’d love to be able to go one day. I live so far away and work for such a small district that I doubt that will ever be a possibility.

One of the things I love about being a blogger is being able to hear about TC institutes since I do not live close enough geographically to easily make it there myself. Some day I might get there, but until then, I will be thankful to bloggers providing glimpses into the learning there! Enjoy Stacey!
