One thing Slice of Life has made clear to me this month is how full my life is. Being on the look out for a slice each day makes me hyper aware of all the small moments filling up my days. I’m intentional about the “stuff” in my day. I think about saying yes and I choose to say no. My family’s health has been under attack this month and I remind myself this takes an additional toll. The thing is, I feel like I’m not enough. There’s more I want to do, but I just don’t seem to get it together. I remind myself this isn’t true. I shake the thought away. But tonight, I’m writing the things I need to hear.
You are enough to love and teach and comfort and make three children feel secure.
You are enough to support and encourage teachers.
You are enough to be a friend.
You are enough to keep the house tidy, the laundry clean, and dinner on the table.
You are enough to blog and comment and email and tweet.
You are enough to write slices and poetry and keynotes and fiction and articles and chapters for a professional book.
You are enough to walk and stretch and play.
You are enough. Just enough.

It’s so essential to stop and think through thoughts such as these from time to time. Thanks for making me pause and think about what my own would be.

Don’t we often wonder when we need to stop wondering if we “are enough”? It goes on for far too long as we work hard to do what Anne Morrow Lindberg cautioned against: trying to water a two-acre field with only a pitcher. There are only so many places we can give, but I’m convinced there are gazillion more places we notice where we can help. Isn’t this the nature of our lives?
Carry on–you do much good in so many places. This place–Two Writing Teachers–is one.

Time is the thing we don’t have enough of. Choosing to say no to things is something we should feel more proud of!

What I wanted to say when I first read your post has been said over and over, better than I can say it. I’ll just say Ditto. And thank you.

Yes you are definitely enough!! I agree that it is easy to feel like we’re not enough. I know I can easily feel that at times as a teacher. There always seems like there’s more to do. Thanks for sharing this encouraging works!

YOU are amazing. I have often thought about what a Superwoman you are– published author, fabulous teacher, sweet momma, youth leader at church– and you even seem to have enough time to squeeze in friends!!! We all need to hear that we are enough once in a while. Thank you for putting those affirmations out there for all of us.

I needed to read this today. Due to budget cuts in our district, there is much fear mongering going on. Lots of mean talking amongst co-workers about who should lose their jobs (including mine) to save money. I can’t control any of it. I need to focus on the kids and being “enough.”

You’ve made a list of all you do, so you are plenty, not just enough. When will you take time for yourself and have enough for yourself?

I have had that “not enough time in the day” feeling lately. I think you articulated the same feeling in a much more powerful way. You give of yourself in so many ways. I have been following TWT for years now and still do not cease to be inspired by your words. It is nice that you allowed yourself the breathing room to stop and find inspiration in your own words as well.

I was amazed to see that you had written on my blog this evening! You are more than enough! I truly appreciate you as a friend and mentor. You have made me feel free enough to risk writing for others. I have been writing for my students now for a few years but for my peers took much more courage and you gave me that! Thank you isn’t enough, but that’s all I have! God bless you! I love this slice! It spoke to me too!

I keep finding bits myself in your posts, Ruth. I battle the “not enough” feeling. There’s just so much I want to do and so many things I want to be. You helped me remember that I am enough and that I really only need to be enough for my family. That’s what really matters. Thanks for this reminder.

It must seem, as creative as you are, that you must take time to do all the things you become aware of, to miss nothing of the life you notice. But there are times we must say this is enough, & I applaud you for saying it. Thanks for being a good model.

You are more than enough. I am in awe of what you do daily, with your work and family life and blog and extra curricular activities (dessert club for one) and I’m sure there’s more. The small moments you share with all of us are truly enjoyed, even if they are not commented on by all. You ARE enough!
