Ruth’s SOLS: Remembering

Grading editorials; going through motions; completing the task, when I was smacked with images from four years ago.

“Adoption is a choice to consider if you don’t want the baby,” I read aloud from the editorial I was grading.  Just like that, my heart did a flip-flop and my son’s birthmother was in my mind.

She did want the baby, I thought.  She didn’t choose adoption because she didn’t want the baby.  She wanted him.

She chose adoption because of all the other things she wanted for him: two parents who dreamed of doting on a child; financial security; college; vacations; a stable home; parents ready to put all of their effort into helping him grow up.

No, she wanted him.  However she wanted a life for him that was impossible for her and her boyfriend to provide.  Standing at the crossroads, she chose adoption not because she didn’t want her baby, but because she wanted more for him.

Sitting in my office, over a stack of papers to be graded, I found tears spilling down my cheeks because of the love she had for him and her trust in me.

  1. I realize I posted my ‘slice of life’ in the wrong place as I came back to read this post. Ruth… such a lovely way to say so much. And now I have tears on my cheeks, too. Thank you.
