A Few Random Bits of Life

  • Right now I’m sitting in Stacey’s kitchen, thinking how good it is to be in the same house as my friend.
  • I already know I have a great class.  (We’ll see if I still feel this way after I get the sub notes for the three days I’m absent.)
  • Yesterday we spent a good portion of the class period in the library.  I was reminded how important it is to slow down and allow time to work its magic.  How can I help instill a love of reading within my students if they don’t first learn to love the possibility of books?
  • Dinner was excellent.  Stacey is an incredible cook . . . check out our meal!

  • This quote from E. E. Cummings is making me think about my teaching:  “The hardest battle is to be nobody but yourself in a world that is doing its best, night and day, to make you like everybody else.”
  • I’m looking forward to NCTE.
  • Stacey and I have now finished drafting half of the book.  The remainder of it is planned. Some weeks our words sing; other weeks they crash and burn.  It takes tenacity to write.  I’ve reached a place where I’m enjoying the writing work.  It took some time to reach this place . . . to appreciate the snags and the rough patches and the rewrites, because in the end there is joy.   I’m glad to be co-writing.  It is amazing to me the way collaboration lifts the level of our work.  I wouldn’t be nearly the writer I am without Stacey.
  • How about you?  Spend a few minutes jotting down a few bits from your life in your Writer’s Notebook.  I think you’ll be glad you did.

  1. Ruth, I wish you the best at NCTE and with your work with Stacey. I appreciate being able to collaborate and reflect with you. You have made me a better teacher and writer. Blogging and writing daily has made me more aware of what our students go through wiht their writing experiences. I am connecting more with them now than ever. So excited about your book. Best wishes to Stacey as well! 🙂
