Inspired by Friday’s “Living Like a Writer” post, I took a few moments to slow down and make a list of gratitudes when it comes to my teaching life. To kick off Back to School Week, won’t you do the same thing? Then take a few minutes and leave a comment with your three favorite reasons on your list.
I’m thankful for:
- Smiles when students realize they are precious
- The sparkle in students’ eyes when they learn something new
- Stories that connect people
- Classrooms that become families
- Colleagues who uplift me
- Informal chats in the hallway
- The power of education to change the world
- Classroom libraries filled to the brim with books
- The potential and hope of a new school year
- The skip in a kindergartener’s step
- The squeals of delight on the playground
- Hugs from first graders
- Notes of encouragement from administrators
- My tidy desk
- Email that works
- Second chances
- Smiles from school secretaries
- The chance to make a difference

I’m thankful for the amount of creative freedom that I am given as a teacher and the wonderful professional development I’ve been able to get.
I’m thankful that I don’t have to use a Basal reader or any other prescribed program to teach reading.
I’m thankful to every person who has ever donated to one of my grants on Donors Choose because without them my room would not be filled with the books and technology that I have for my students.
