I’ve been working on a new craft table about Ahlberg’s Book The Pencil for the past couple of days. I hope to use this craft table in writing conferences with my students when we get to our fiction picture book unit in March.
So far, this is what I’ve come up with:
The final version, which I hope to finish by Monday, will include more craft move categories in the following areas:
- Conclusion (This section will talk about satisfying conclusions that include both setting details and the resolution.)
- Ellipses in Dialogue
- Parentheses Usage
- Repetition of Actions
- Use of Strong Action Verbs
Thoughts? Comments? Please let me know what you’re thinking about the Scribd Document that appears here in draft form.
Note: The Pencil was written by Allan Ahlberg and illustrated by Bruce Ingman. It was published by Candlewick Press in 2008. A review copy was provided by the publisher.

It may come later in the week… This is taking me a bit longer than I expected!
