Ruth’s SOLSC: Keeping Company.

Sunday morning the little voice came to me through the monitor, “Momma, I’m uuuupppp.”  Since I was single-parenting-it (due to some massive sporting event in Indy that my husband was attending) and had just stepped out of the shower I thought, You’re going to have to waaaaait.

Then the knock at the door.  Just a minute, I thought, he’s gated in his room (to avoid a dangerous fall down our stairs, which are too large to gate at the top).  “Mom, S. is up,” came the voice of our four year old, “Come get him.”  It’s not even seven and I’m already being told what to do — such is life with a four year old, but aloud I said, “I’ll be there in a minute, I need to finish getting dressed.”

“Okay,” and off she pattered back to her bedroom.  Now that was too easy, I thought.  The voice through the monitor had stopped and no one was waiting outside my door.  So I took my time.   Once I was ready to face the house, I opened the door and stepped into the hall.  Turning the corner, an image that melted my heart greeted me.

Our four year old had pulled her pillow and “Mimi Blanket” (the quilt my mom made her) into the hall and lied down on the floor outside the gate.  Our two year old, on the other side, was likewise wrapped in his “Mimi Blanket” and curled up on his pillow.

I blinked back tears.

The four year old said, “I didn’t want him to be lonely.”

I blinked back more tears.

S. stood up, hung over the gate and said, “I love (four year old’s name).  She’s my friend.”

Once again, more blinking.  How did I ever get to be so blessed?
