I {Heart} Writing Workshop

In honor of Valentine’s Day, let’s make a luscious list of all the reasons we love writing workshop. I’ll start the list here and you add to it in the comments. Sweet!

  • Writing workshop helps writers see the world differently. When people live like writers, they have more compassion and mercy and acceptance of others.
  • Writing workshop gives students self-confidence. When people live like writers they have a stronger understanding of themselves and how they fit into the world.
  • Writing workshop gives people a chance to see how their voice matters and how their words can influence others.
  • Writing workshop makes conventions matter. I see more growth toward Standard English in writers from workshops than those in a traditional classroom.
  • Writing workshop encourages innovative thinking and imagination.

Can’t wait to see the list go on and on and on in the comments. Happy {Heart} Day!

  1. Writing Workshop lets me be a better teacher who is more aware and more involved in her students’ writing. Even doing a first-year implementer of workshop and knowing that I am doing a less than stellar job, I am so much more effective teaching my students than last year and all the years before. Yay workshop!

  2. Writing Workshop is fun! Paper, pencils, pens, crayons, markers, construction paper–and a stapler! Talk about a set up that makes kids excited and ready to dig in. Fun, fun, fun!

  3. Writing Workshop ensures that students are engaged in the practice of writing on a regular basis. Without standardized tests to pressure teachers to continue this practice, it is even more essential that we know its benefits.
