I used to be wiped-out after school. I spent every ounce of energy during the day and came home completely zapped. 4:00 pm in the summer seemed to be a completely different time than 4:00 pm during the school year. Four o’ clock pm summer felt like there was still an entire day left to live. 4:00 pm school year felt as though it was time to get ready for bed.
Three years ago I decided I needed 4:00 pm summer to be the norm — whether I spent the day in school or not. Today I live a complete day after 4:00 pm. This is the time of day which matters most. Some days this is easier to remember than others.
Today’s “slice” is life after school . . .
Life after school is about hugs and giggles and cuddles.
Life after school is bike rides.
Life after school is cooking dinner, tonight Dill Chicken in the pressure cooker, a new cabbage recipe, and steamed carrots.
Life after school is helping two eight year olds make banana bread.
Life after school is watching domino run after domino run after domino run being tested.
Life after school is building train tracks.
Life after school is doing a load of laundry.
Life after school is embossing a project for second grade.
Life after school is revising chapters.
Life after school is praying around a dinner table, laughing through the meal, and cleaning up spilled drinks.
Life after school is baths, books, and brushing teeth.
Life after school is my favorite time of the day.
It is when I get to be my best self. And do the things which matter most.
