A Walk (Ruth’s SOLS 5/31)

“Want to go for a walk tonight?” I said into the answering machine, “Call me back and let me know, I can go anytime.”

The phone rang two minutes later, “Hey, I was taking pizzas out of the oven. Yes, I’d love to walk tonight. Do you mind if we go after dark?”

“No problem . . . ” we made a plan and hung up.

Walking in the crisp night, bundled in mittens, scarves, and hats, I breathe in the frosty air, stars, and friendship. Heidi and I have been walking together for a year; however, it’s been months since we’ve been out. The winter months caused us to hunker down. I need the walk tonight because my body is demanding fresh air and movement.

More so, though, I need the talk tonight. I need to step-step-step beside the friend who understands me before I understand myself. I need to chat-chat-chat to make sense of life. I need to sigh-giggle-cry to soothe my soul.

It wasn’t just the walk that was good for my heart tonight. It is having a friend I can call at the drop of a hat. It is knowing I have reached a level of comfort with Heidi that I don’t worry about imposing or being a bother. It’s being able to be myself, without filters, and knowing it’s okay.

  1. Good for you both that made the time and effort to venture into the dark and cold! Some times it’s soooo hard to get out the door, but once out it’s so invigorating and mind- clearing!

  2. I ditto the comments above from Theresa and Stacey. Friendship is awesome. So glad you had the chance to share. Elizabeth and I walked tonight again, sharing together.

  3. Oh, yes-yes-yes as my students would say it sounds like a poem. How blessed you are by this friendship. Your thoughts remind me of a quote that I love, “A friend hears the song in my heart and sings it to me when my memory fails.”

  4. I liked the way you hyphenated three sets of words:
    step-step-step
    chat-chat-chat
    sigh-giggle-cry

Three sets of words, three words in-between the hyphens. Lovely.

    Or shall I say, lovely-lovely-lovely!
