I’ve been intentional about writing a teaching point for each of my lessons in Reading and Writing Workshop. Last night I typed them all to share with my students. Starting Monday, they will be responsible for recording the teaching point each day along with any needed notes. The teacing points are based on student need, as well as state standards.
I’ve found by capturing the learning goal for the day in a single sentence my instruction has improved. Always before I would think deeply about the minilesson and share the topic in the form of a title with my students. Now by pushing myself to put the teaching point in a single sentence I’ve lifted the level of my teaching.

Thanks for posting this! I started doing this about 4 years ago after being turned onto Regie Routman’s books. I am, however, the only teacher that has the students write the teaching point. I’m finding this year that my students are finally able to listen to the lesson and then name my teaching point before I remind them of it…I was beginning to think that maybe I was pushing too hard in having them write it…but feel better now — thanks!

Thanks for this. We have been asked to write a “guiding question” on the board every day for our class, and it has been a challenge for me to come up with them. But I saw this, then started thinking of my lessons in terms of statements and voila! So much easier to come up with a matching question. Thanks for the suggestion!!

I love, love, love this idea! I too have noticed the more details I write in my lessons the more stuff I try to cram in, thus turning a 15 minute (focused) mini-lesson in to a 30-45 minute (kitchen sink) fatty lesson. ( I hate the word maxi-lesson because of the image it conjures up.)
I also love the idea of having students responsible for recording their thinking about the lesson too!

Will you be using Moodle again this year? If so, can you tell us more about it.
Have a good weekend!
