I’m from a tiny town in West Texas, and my grandparents lived on a farm. They bred catfish in a 20 by 10 cinderblock water holding tank. To get cool in the hot summer, they let me go swimming with the catfish. I remember the multitude of catfish and not being scared at all. I do remember feeling afraid of the swarming wasps above, so I tried to hold my breath underwater, so as not to get bitten. I remember trying to “become” a catfish and dart through the water. Today, I can hardly swim in a lake, what’s less an ocean, for fear of the fish that make me cringe. What happens to us from youth to adulthood that makes us fear the creatures of the natural world?
