It’s unexpected time alone right now. I was headed off to grab my laptop in order to get some work done and not be sucked into the blog world. On the way, I stumbled across the pile of today’s mail. Sticking out was a manila envelope with just an “R” visible, written in the black sharpie marker pen of my friend who lives 872 miles away.
I pull it out of the stack for a closer look. I’m thinking if any milestone has happened in October that I’ve missed, but Stacey naturally remembered. Nothing comes to mind, and I open the package.
I’m greeted with a mini-note and a totally fun polk-a-dotted wrapping papered gift. Holding the package in my hand, I read the note. Peace washes over me. My friend, 872 miles away, has realized the stress I’ve been under when I haven’t even realized it myself. She sent a simple treat, just for me, in the mail.
I unwrap the gift, setting aside some of the wrapping paper in order to put it in my writer’s notebook, and am greeted with a totally rockin’ pair of earrings. How long since I’ve bought earrings simply because they rock? Junior high, maybe? I put them in my ears and smile. How could she have known this was just what I needed? I didn’t even know myself.
I’m reminded that friendship is made up of little things: the being there; the encouragement; the smiles; the support. And that friendship is built bit by bit, even living 872 miles apart.
Thanks Stacey.

I’m so glad you liked the earrings Ruth. I’m glad they put a smile on your face!

I loved this “Slice of Life” about long distance friendship. That type of friendship seems easier in today’s high tech world….yet…a gift sent by “snail mail” is really a memorable treat! Nice to have a special friend, no matter how far away.
