Flipping My Schedule Upside Down

Today might be one of a handful of times I will ever teaching Writing Workshop after lunch when my kids come back from dance. (I LOVE teaching writing in the morning. When I was in NYC, my principal gave me special permission to do this since we were supposed to teach it in the afternoon.) I thought that having a double writing period might be good since they only have three school days left until they publish their Poetry Portfolio.

So what’s happening this morning? Well, I’m going to have my kids write letters to their fifth grade teachers. When I got each of their portfolios this past summer, that was the first thing I saw. It warmed my heart since it gave me the chance to get to know them a bit before they came to my class. Plus, I had the chance to understand what kind of writer each of them was when since the letters were unedited.

I cannot believe that five days from now my kiddos will be heading out of my door for summer vacation and then to the fifth grade this fall. This makes me sad and happy — all at once. Sad because they’re a phenomenal group of children. Happy because I got my class list yesterday and I’ll have 20 new children in my care next year, which is exciting to think about.
