Not so much a memoir post, but a post about collecting memories.
Soon after the girls arrived in our home a book arrived in my mail. Photo Freedom by Stacy Julian has revolutionized my life. When we realized the girls would be moving into our home in just over a week, we had to do a serious re-haul of our two extra bedrooms. One was still the nursery, so that wasn’t so difficult. However, the other was my studio. It was the place where good stuff happened in the name of art — scrapbooking and quilting and card making and blogging. It had to be moved.
So I was relocated to the laundry room. Finally, ten weeks later, I feel like it’s my happy place again. When the book arrived, it allowed me the opportunity to organize my photos along with all of the other stuff in my studio.
Because of this, I am so much more effective at telling the important stories in my life. I’m also becoming even more aware of the living I’m doing. As this awareness increases, so does my desire to creatively capture these moments. Not only am I noticing a change in the photos I take, but also the words I collect in my many writer’s notebooks.
It has been a liberating, rejuvenating and joyful process. I’m excited to be a more effective photojournalist for myself and my family.
BTW — You may want to check out Stacy Julian’s blog, Altogether Too Happy. I’ve been a reader for a few years now and love her inspiration.
