Poetry Friday 030708

Every Friday we read a poem together. I found this one in a poetry book I just got and thought I’d share it with my kids since it’s written by another child. Additionally, I thought it would be neat to see who would take-on the weekend challenge.

Poetry Friday is being hosted at The Simple and the Ordinary this week.

  1. Hi, Stacey–
I spent the day at a women in literacy conference … and had a little “Poetry Friday” of my own: one of the exhibitors gave a mini PowerPoint this morning about the writing her students have done and the reading and other pre-writing activities they do. I immediatly thought of you because the first poem they put up on the screen was none other than “Each of Us Has a Name”!

  2. I created fluency folders this year (for second graders) and filled it with different poems that I found. I try (am working on doing better) and have us read one poem a week and use it for word study as well. I also send it home to have parents listen to their child read and comment on their fluency…I am excited to see how reading this poetry over the year will influence our study of poetry in a few weeks to come. The ever-exciting prompt study is coming up next 🙂

Thanks again for all of the ideas you put on here. This slice of life challenge is truly pushing me to be more of a writer. I even talked with Ruth about how I look for things to write about in my day now.
