Welcome to the 19th Annual Slice of Life Story Challenge! I’m celebrating your commitment to this vibrant writing community. Throughout the first half of the challenge, you’ll find a daily tip at the end of each announcement. Plus, be sure to check out our BE INSPIRED section each day for a featured slice-of-life story and occasional quotes about writing.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
- NEW SLICERS
- Greetings to all the new Slicers joining us this year! For the next few days, please add “I’m a first-year Slicer” to your comments so our longtime community members can stop by your blog.
- ICYMI: Check out the answers to some essential frequently asked questions. Reading through the FAQ piece will help you feel like a pro.
- FOR ALL
- Please fill out this year’s sign-up form by 11:59 p.m. EST today. The form will close tomorrow morning, March 2. Participating in all 31 days helps keep the spirit of our month-long challenge alive.
- Each day’s “Call for Slice of Life Stories” opens at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time. If it’s still before midnight (New York time), post your story link on that day’s post. After midnight, use the new day’s post. Comments usually close after 24 hours, but sometimes stay open a bit longer if our team can’t close them right at midnight.
- Multi-Lit Fridays are back! We encourage you to blog in another language. The first Multi-Lit Friday is on March 6.
BE INSPIRED
Amanda Potts’ post, “PD Day Agenda,” pokes fun at a required professional development day by using a fake agenda with exact times to show how absurd it is. With irony and sharp humor, she points out how the topics don’t matter, the schedule is rushed, and the “proof of engagement” is often pointless. To write like Amanda, choose any boring or required experience and present it in a formal format, like an agenda or memo. Add specific, witty details that show the gap between what’s expected and what really happens. Consider ending with an explicit critique that many teachers can relate to.
SUPPORT
If you encounter any issues with non-working links, problems with your permalink, or a permalink causing an image to appear in the comment section, our Slicer Troubleshooting Team is here to help. The team comprises four experienced Slicers: Glenda Funk, Fran McCrackin, Joanne Toft, and Peter von Euler. (Click here for a short tutorial to help you find your permalink and link your slice-of-life story to this post.)
For inquiries, please email us rather than leaving them in the comments below or on social media. We appreciate your patience as we receive a high volume of emails in the early days of the challenge. We will respond to all emails promptly.
Please direct specific questions to the appropriate co-author.
- If your last name starts with A-G, email Jess Carey at jessica.carey224[at]gmail.com
- If your last name starts with H-N, email Lainie Levin at lainlev72[at]gmail.com.
- If your last name starts with O-T, email Melanie Meehan at meehanmelanie[at]gmail.com.
- If your last name starts with U-Z, email Sarah Valter at sarahvalterreads[at]gmail.com.
- If you need support with the Classroom Challenge, email Leah Thomas at leahthomaswrites[at]gmail.com.
ONE MORE THING
There’s a giveaway of Melanie Meehan’s new book, Foundational Skills for Writing: A Brain-Based Guide to Strengthen Executive Functions, Language, and Other Cornerstones for Writers, which she co-authored with Maggie Beattie Roberts Head over to Sarah Valter’s book review, read through it, and then leave a comment on Sarah’s post by Monday, March 2, at 12:00 PM EST for a chance to win a copy.
To learn more about Melanie and Maggie’s new book, listen to the latest episode of the Two Writing Teachers Podcast, which features an interview I did with them.

I’m happy to be back for another SOLSC. I hope I’m more successful this year than my derailed attempt at slicing last year. I’m struggling as a writer these days, but I’m determined to try. Looking forward to reading slices this month and catching up with folks. Hard to believe this is my 18th year!
I think I’m mostly going to be posting Substack notes this month, and here’s the first one:

My March slices for the last several years are collections of poems. I wrote about birds, flowers, and food for the past three years. This year I was inspired by Rilke’s Book of Hours and am taking lines/phrases from his poetry to create poems to God. https://wordancerblog.com/sol-march-2026-book-of-hours/

I’m a first-time slicer and I’m so excited (and equally nervous) to be here. This “first slice” is a slice of my life from a long time ago, but it’s a story that still brings a smile to my face and one I would love to finally share. I hope this works! https://giovannapanzera.blog/2026/03/01/sewing-seams/
