The Rights of a Writer

Estimated Reading Time: 1 minute (158 words)

Primary Audience: Writers

This summer, I listened to the incredible Donlayn Miller speak about reading motivation at the St. Louis Love & Literacy Conference. Donalyn shared a beautiful poster written by Daniel Pennac (Author of The Rights of a Reader, originally published in French).

This poster can be downloaded for free here (Reproduced by permission of Walker Books Ltd, London SE11 5HJ • illustrations © 2006 Quentin Blake).

Pennac’s poster is essentially a brief belief statement. Inspired by the beautiful illustrations (which I could never live up to) and the passionate convictions (to which I hold a few of my own), I decided to make my own: The Rights of a Writer.

What did I miss? What would you add? Feel free to download either poster to hang in your classroom (I hung them side-by-side in the school hallway.) Or, create your own, and share it with me! Happy writing!

  1. What a great idea, Leah! I’m printing this now, and I’ll hang it up right by my Writer’s Creed. I’ll be sharing it with colleagues, too. Thank you!
