For this blog series throwback, I selected “Authentic Purposes for Writing” from 2017. Providing children opportunities within a busy school day to write authentically is one of the most valuable teaching tools we have. As an early childhood educator, I am passionate about this topic because of how writing for authentic purposes gives children a sense of independence and self-direction. It is truly magical to see the way they express themselves through a combination of drawing and writing, conveying their pride, confidence, and joy as they use their emergent skills in ways that matter most to them.
