No matter how much work I do setting up learning spaces, no matter how new and cool my school supplies are, school just doesn’t feel like SCHOOL until children are there. I love standing in the hallway that first morning. Some strut through halls like they own the place, while others are more tentative. But there’s one thing for certain: all of these loveys come with their own strengths, their own challenges.
One group of students I continually think about is our English Language Learner (ELL) population, especially when it comes to writing instruction. It doesn’t take much time to interact with many of our ELL kids to know they are full of creativity and insight. I’m always searching for ways to support their expression, both within and beyond their experience with multiple languages.
Luckily, there’s a wealth of resources from the Two Writing Teachers archive to give me a boost! I’ve collected some of my favorites from years past, and I’m sharing them with you.
But wait! There’s more! Don’t forget to give this TWT podcast episode a listen. It’s a conversation with Shawnda Fukano about strategies for working with multilingual learners.
