Recently, when scrolling through Instagram, this reel created by Allie Joy, an art therapist who shares her work and ideas @thejoyoftherapy, caught my eye. In the short clip, Allie shares how she has uses paint chip poetry and with clients.
Paint chip poetry was a new idea for me and as soon as I saw it, I knew I had to give it a try. I decided to give it a whirl with my kids while on vacation. We selected a few paint chip samples from Home Depot, we went with Behr, as recommended by Allie. Then, when we got home, we worked on writing poetic lines using each paint color name. When we were done, we had fun arranging the poetic lines into a collective poem you can read below.

If the idea of paint chip poetry sounds like fun, give it a try and share some of your creations with us. If a trip to the paint store isn’t in the cards for you today, I found this free paint chip generator online.
We invite you to craft a slice of life story (in any form), share a link in the comments section below, then read and comment on the stories of at least three other slicers.
Let’s slice.

Oh my goodness! What a great idea! I used to go to Home Depot and a bunch of other paint stores to gather paint chips for class projects. I love the poetry idea. This week, I wrote about a recent trip to Maine and finding peace on the coast. https://wordancerblog.com/2023/07/23/maine-ly-peaceful/

The writing exercise was to write in a sibling’s point of view. This was a challenge. I kept hearing my voice. I noticed sentences getting shorter and I did some revision with omitting a transition and replacing words with more specific vocabulary.
