We may write about the teaching of writing, but we’re passionate about the teaching of reading too! In fact, two members of this team have done a lot of thinking, writing, and editing about the teaching of reading for the past year. Our very own Anna Gratz Cockerille and Beth Moore are part of the team who worked on the new Units of Study for Teaching Reading, K–5, now available from Lucy Calkins and colleagues.
Anna was a supervising editor on the new Units of Study for Teaching Reading, K–5. That means she communicated about what needed doing to Lucy and relayed information to other editors, as well as edited books. She had a hand in most of the books in the series.
Beth co-authored the If…Then…Curriculum: Assessment-Based Instruction, K-2 book with Lucy Calkins. This book contains alternate unit of study plans and supports differentiated instruction by providing support for one-to-one conferring and small group work.
As you can imagine, this was a HUGE project! Congratulations to Anna, Beth, Lucy, and the rest of the Units of Study Team. This series is bound to have a profound impact on the way reading is taught in K-5 classrooms.
I am a literacy consultant who has spent the past dozen years working with teachers to improve the teaching of writing in their classrooms. While I work with teachers and students in grades K-6, I'm a former fourth and fifth-grade teacher so I have a passion for working with upper elementary students.
I'm the author of Craft Moves (Stenhouse Publishers, 2016) and the co-author of Jump Into Writing (Zaner-Bloser, 2021), Welcome to Writing Workshop (Stenhouse Publishers, 2019), and Day By Day (Stenhouse, 2010).
