Here’s the response from the WordPress Staffer about the commenting issues several Slicers contacted us about:
Howdy,
We’ve recently updated our commenting system.
Now if someone tries to comment with an email address attached to a WordPress.com account, they’ll need to sign into WordPress.com before they can comment.
If commenters have forgotten their password they can request a reset:
http://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword
I realize this solution is not ideal for some of you, especially folks who don’t want to sign up for a WordPress.com account. However, it looks like this is the only solution that’s being proposed from WordPress at the present time.

It’s probably a way for them (WP) to track statistics, for advertising purposes. That’s my guess.

@Kevin: I suspect you’re correct. They didn’t bother to alert bloggers to the change, which is what really kicks me up!
