Imagine yourself at the kitchen table, in your pajamas. Imagine one person you’d allow to see you that way, and write in the voice you’d use to that friend.

I always use this quote with my 8th graders. It is one that initially elicits uncomfortable giggles as they picture themselves in the class with pajamas on, but it is so effective for getting across how effective it is to have that level of honesty in their writing voices. This post reminded me that I have lots of writer’s quotes that can be used as lesson springboards…I think you just inspired a series of blog posts!

Great way to get kids thinking about voice. Hadn’t thought of it that way either but now I will. Thanks, Sandra for the words of wisdom.

This quote is certainlhy right and that would be my husband. But seriously it is one I plan to share with my students! They don’t always get the audience idea and I think this says it all! Thanks!

I love Cisneros! I have seen her speak a number of times and the intimacy of voice she suggests is present then, too. She really moves her audience through her authenticity. Thanks for great words this morning!
